Many of these cultures are animistic and attribute special significance to the "spirits" of certain animals. There is often a reverence to an animal even when it is used as food. <br /><br />So I think we can be pretty safe is saying that humans have been spiritual long before they were religious. <br /><br />I can't know, but I suspect the shift occurred after domestication of food animals.
