FaceBook bans pictures of breast feeding... I tried to watch 'Fargo' on the tube the other day but all the dubbing of 'foolish idiot' in place of more natural language was too distracting. I did notice that they didn't cut any of the images of murder and mayhem including Steve Buscemi's foot sticking out of the wood chipper. CSI shows mock-ups of rotting and burned corpses in close up, but if it's a female victim, the breasts must be covered. I know this country was colonized by a bunch of Puritans but that was centuries ago. Can anyone explain to me why people in this country would rather have their kids see acts of incredible violence rather than a natural part of the human body?

Breast feeding is serious business.
I always love the awkward phrases they toss in instead of cusswords. I honestly prefer it when they don't replace the words and have the dignity to bleep it, so that way you know that the original writers weren't insane.
As for full frontal corpse nudity; one step at a time. We are incredibly accustomed to violence and have it heavily romanticized. And, we have sexuality heavily stigmatized and view primarily as something lurid that needs to be concealed (and find more pleasure from it due to that secretive and forbidden nature). People often complain about that, and mention how it is suggestive of mixed up priorities. I agree. Yet I kinda like like that all the same!
Pliny:
I'm guessing that this question is primarily rhetorical on your part. Although it is true that we owe some of this to our Puritan founders, we really owe most of it to the Catholic Church. Witness the need to get native cultures in Africa, Polynesia, and among Native American tribes, to name only a few, to "cover up" their nudity in order to come to Jesus. This has nothing to do with breast feeding; it has everything to do with the same viewpoint that now brings us the idea that sex is shameful and sinful, even between consenting adults, outside of a Church sanctioned marriage, and only then with the express intention of begetting children. Since any other expression of physical affection, let alone sexual activity. may be pleasurable (but not "sanctioned"), of course an exposed breast, even in the act of supporting the results of procreation, might lead some depraved man to think "sinful" thoughts.
It's stupid not to allow nudity but I don't want to SEE it most of the time. (Gaaack! Do you remember the fat naked guy in Borat?)
Not everyone can "pull it off" and not cause ratings to drop.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGH! I had blocked that from my mind like 'MacArthur Park' - damn - now I can't get the image of him singing Macarthur Park.. Pliny dives off the roof
Boobies are Evil!!
(See Brian's latest post)
You know...
It just occurred to me that the same reasoning could be used to ban altar boys from the Catholic Church...
Just sayin'...
I agree.
Murder is illegal in all 50 states, I think. Sex is legal in 49 of the 50 states. Why is it that images of murder, an illegal act, can be shown on broadcast TV, but sexuality, LEGAL, is banned. Not just sexuality, but nudity in general.
I find this to be very telling of our society. violence is OK, but sexuality is bad ?
It's 'cos they are boobilicious!
I was thinking that we could probably trace the idea that boobs are 'not for show' to one person, the same as we can trace the legality of marijuana back to that one stalwart American hero(I forget his name) who effectively put all the hemp farms in the USA out of business.
This oughtta help with the 'MacArthur Park' thingy, Pliny...
Cure for MacArthur Park Thingy
I'm still trying to figure out why images of breastfeeding are considered sexual.
Am I the only one who thinks of this in a non-sexual way?
I LOVEs me some breasts ( all shapes and sizes), but can't see the sexual side of babies feeding.
Mac - you aren't the crazy one - the censors seem to be the one's who are off base.
youtube still has some, if you're in the market for such a thing :-)
Yumm !
