Cents of Scale

How big is big? We hear about millions, billions and trillions all the time but it's hard for me at least to comprehend these numbers. So I did a little exercise.

Take a penny.

Enlarge it a million times,

Enlarge it a billion times,

Now enlarge a penny a trillion times,

The little red ball at the lower right is the sun...

At a quadrillion times the size of a penny, the orbit of Neptune looks like the blue ellipse.

That's some serious coin. This metaphor falls completely apart at greater distances, but if we shift it a bit and imagine that the orbit of Neptune were the size of a penny, the Milky Way would be this big...

Yes, you are right - Pliny was plenty bored last night, but I hope you can make some cents out of these numbers now... (rim shot!)

Has the pun gauntlet been thrown again?

Thinking and thinking and thinking about a pun but have come up empty handed. I suck at this game. *sigh*

Well, cents Brian started it, I may well throw my two cents in....

Oh the heck with it, all I have is noncents.

Well, reference to the title of the post seems to be the coin of the realm for the punsters who have so far not been able to mint anything too atrocious. For my money, if I had a nickle for everyone who failed to best me in a punfest I'd be a rich man for I offer no quarter to those who would challenge. Whether its a groaner or a kroner I've not yet begun to pun!

(Apologies to Mac)

Pliny,

If you hadn't used pennies for explication about cosmic size your post would've been noncents.

How come you didn't use cents from Nippon? You know...the Japennies.

Man that was terrible.

Punishment even.

You wouldn't have this on a post about evolution because that would change everything.

Puns about money are a dime-a-dozen aren't they?

OneBlood - let's be Franc. With puns such as those you'll never earn a money-ker as a punmeister. Perhaps if you didn't try to post so many in quick succession - you know peso yourself a little more. Yuan to avoid peaking too early in this kind of contest...

But Pliny, you're just shilling jokes expecting to win a crown and you can't match me pound for pound. Maybe you should be more pence-ive before you come back suh!

(Sorry Pliny this one takes the form of an 80's rap battle).

I guess you have a yen for the old days...but euro-ver the hill. Nickel and diming your way through the posts. Yet mine are priceless.

"Yuan to avoid peaking too early in this kind of contest..."

That was good though :-D

OneBlood, As they say in New Guinea; toea his own. I dinar know you were so game to try your hand at the punfest, but you must be out of your gourde. When done shilling your own skills, and though it's late and I'm somewhat groszy, I'm not ready yet to paisa you the baton quite yet. ;)

To all of you ... Uuuuuugghh!!!

Stacy seems manat us for all the puns; she must not be a riel fan of such word play.

I give up. Outclassed again. You sir are money :-)

Congratulations.

I am however demanding punitive damages. You should be drawn and quartered.

Are puns a family tradition for you? It was a dinnertime favorite for my mom, and I've passed it on to my son as well.

Only dime will tell whether it was worth the effort; it mite do some good...have some value.

Seriously, I surrender :-)

Mrs Pliny often threatens to dispatch me if I don't stop with the puns. Puns and sick humor are my burden. My daughter seems to have picked up that trait to the horror of her mother. She even does a rim shot sound effect at the end of a particular groaner.

I'm glad you surrendered OneBlood; I would have hated to make you rupee the day you happened by this blog ;)

I see that 'The Author' has struck again. Censorship!

How dare you Author! -If that is your real name.-

Shamelessly authoritarian you are.

"I would have hated to make you rupee the day you happened by this blog."

I laughed out loud and my son said, "What? What?"

The little guy's eight, he thought he said something 'wrong'/funny.

Wow, Pliny.
With this pun battle Waging between you and Oneblood, I could barely enjoy my Dinar
I've got to hand it to you, Euro so good at being punny, when you gey a Yen for it
You really know how to Pound one home, to hit your Mark.

I mean, it's as if I left and, Dong(Ringgit?), it started.
I'm just glad you're both Centsible guys and nobody got hurt :-)

But do tell me,
Why were you willing to take my two cents worth, but only give me a penny for my thoughts?
What are you doing with all that profit?

Pliny-the-in-Between said...

What are you doing with all that profit?

Buying anti-emetics... ;)

Are you attempting to rekindle the smoldering punflagration?

mac said...

Nothing of the sort, sir.

I acquiesce ;-)
