Clear Priorities in Oregon

Wow. Our State's financial crisis threatens the collapse of education and public safety programs. But the Oregon legislature is tirelessly working on fixing our most pressing problems. It's not the looming crash but something far more important. It's expanding the rights of something that cannot speak for itself. I'm talking about guns of course. In addition to not killing people, guns can't talk for themselves or advocate for their rights. Fortunately Oregon's representative have got ya covered. Two bills passing through the tightly booked session wisely avoid any debt issues and concentrate on these really important issues.

1) Eliminating public disclosure of people who have concealed weapons permits. After all the privacy of anyone packing is far more important than the rest of the public knowing who outside of law enforcement is packing heat. We have maps of all kinds that allow us to gauge our safety but the privacy of the gun must be respected. After all, the Government could suddenly decide to confiscate the millions of guns in the nation's private arsenals though they'd be out gunned.

2) Honoring out of state weapons permits. We don't honor out of state medical licenses, nursing licenses, etc., but once again the rights of the gun must be preserved protected and expanded.

Way to go Salem! Glad you aren't getting distracted by trivia.

I'm not adding to the conversation, but you've got some moral support from ole Harry.

The most fecund ground for modern political machinations is the absurd, and not a benign, tittering, absurd either.

I really just wants to quote H.L. Mencken on numerous points here, but I'll settle for one: "Laws are no longer made by a rational process of public discussion; they are made by a process of blackmail and intimidation, and they are executed in the same manner. The typical lawmaker of today is a man wholly devoid of principle - a mere counter in a grotesque and knavish game. If the right pressure could be applied to him, he would be cheerfully in favor of polygamy, astrology or cannibalism."

I would, of course, argue with Mencken that this has always been the case and will continue to be the case for some time.

In reference to these particular issues, it's really quite simple. The legislature has no real solutions to the problems the state faces, so they invent problems they can easily fix and "fix" things that motivate the most moronic, fanatic, or wealthy of their supporters.

I actually support The Second Amendment. That doesn't mean I think any of that law makes sense.

I can't figure out why a state should honor another state's concealed carry permit. It just doesn't make sense.
As for not wanting to make permit holders information public:
If they don't want their business out there, don't get a permit. The government should already know who has these permits - if it ever came to taking the firearms away.
