I love a lot of things about my iPhone. But the spell checker thing for texting is not one of them. I think the thing was designed by the same people who wrote that Hungarian to English translation book for the old Monty Python skit.
It's technically an auto-correct, but they tried to do that without running it on top of a decent grammar engine and got an epic fail instead. In order to have a good auto-correct, the software must be able to parse a sentence, determine what type of word it is, and act accordingly, but since it's normally acting as just a "dumb" auto-correct, it makes many mistakes. I'd like to rip into the code for it, but alas, the source is forever locked in the dungeons of Cupertino.
The biggest complaint I have is that it automatically makes the change unless you actively opt out (kind of like a magazine subscription...) instead of requiring the user to select the change like every other program in the known universe.
Things like this is why I got a blackberry. I know, Apple is the poop. But, my Blackberry Torch is a tool, whereas I see the iPnone as a toy.
The iPhone does have a quicker, better browser. However, the Torch has better text input, and of course, much better messaging (that's kind of their thing).

The Android one isn't too great either, I alleviated the problem by utilizing a custom dictionary; not sure if you can do that.

Dilbert had a few good bits on the phone spell checker. Too lazy to link right now, but the adventurous can go searching.

Well, it was designed by Apple, and they know best...

Android 2.3.4: voice control and input for everything and it's awesome.
